Signs you have rodents

Rodents are often active out of sight. Look for these signs in attics, garages, kitchens, storage rooms, and utility areas:

  • Droppings, nesting material, or a strong stale odor in an enclosed space.
  • Gnaw marks on packaging, wood, wiring covers, or stored items.
  • Scratching or movement sounds in walls, ceilings, or attic spaces after dark.
  • Greasy rub marks or repeated tracks along walls and behind equipment.
  • Food packages or pet supplies that have been opened or damaged.

Why rodents are a problem in southeast Alabama

Rodent activity can occur throughout the year, but mice and rats may move closer to buildings in fall and winter as outdoor food and shelter change. In southeast Alabama, mild weather and nearby vegetation can also support activity outside the coldest months. Rural lots, open land, barns, storage areas, and landscaping can provide shelter near a home before rodents find a gap into the structure.

Once inside, rodents seek food, water, and protected nesting locations. A small opening near a utility line, garage door, vent, roof edge, or foundation can be worth inspecting. Kitchens and storage rooms may show food damage, while attics and wall cavities can reveal noise or nesting. Correct identification and inspection help determine whether the issue is a mouse, rat, or another animal.

Rodent control is not just about setting a trap. A practical approach considers activity, access, food storage, and how to check whether the problem is changing. In commercial buildings, a recurring plan can include attention to receiving areas, waste storage, food handling spaces, and other locations important to daily operations.

How Pest-Ex treats rodents

Pest-Ex inspects the signs, entry points, food, shelter, and areas you are concerned about. Your technician explains the control options, including devices and practical steps to reduce access.

Follow-up visits show where activity continues and what needs attention. We can recommend exclusion and maintenance steps; the property owner or a contractor may need to complete building repairs. New openings can bring rodents back.

Ask about recurring pest-control plans for ongoing monitoring or seasonal activity. For a rental or business, coordinate access with the owner, staff, or property manager so the technician can inspect the areas where signs appeared.

What you can do between visits

Between visits, make the building easier to monitor and less inviting to rodents:

  • Store pantry items and animal feed in closed containers and clean up spills promptly.
  • Keep garbage secured and avoid leaving pet food out overnight when practical.
  • Reduce cardboard and clutter near walls so droppings or damage are easier to notice.
  • Note sounds, droppings, and damaged items without sweeping or vacuuming dry waste before asking for safe cleanup guidance.
  • Report gaps around pipes, vents, doors, and roof edges so the right person can assess repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Why do rodents enter homes in fall and winter?

As outdoor food and shelter change, rodents may look for protected places near people. A small entry gap and accessible food can make a building attractive in any season.

How does Pest-Ex find rodent entry points?

We inspect likely openings around utility lines, doors, vents, roof edges, and foundations. The owner or a contractor may need to complete building repairs.

Should I clean droppings before a visit?

Avoid stirring up dry droppings. Follow public-health cleanup guidance and ask Pest-Ex for instructions if you are unsure how to handle a particular area.

Does a trap alone solve a rodent problem?

Control devices may be one part of a plan, but inspection, food storage, access points, and follow-up also matter. Pest-Ex can explain which steps fit the property.

What areas does Pest-Ex serve?

Pest-Ex serves Dothan, Enterprise, Ozark, Eufaula, Troy, Ashford, Headland, Abbeville, Webb, and surrounding Wiregrass communities from its Dothan office.

Called a pest control company and they never responded. Called Pest-Ex and they sent a tech out the very next day. Steve was very professional and a joy to talk with. He sprayed the perimeter of the house and I started to see the effects immediately. He didn't try to upsell any services that I didn't need. Pest-Ex earned my trust! Their rates are fair and reasonable if not better than the national chains. With that being said, we signed up for the quarterly treatment option. I don't normally give 5 stars, but Pest-Ex really impressed me!!! Thank you Pest-Ex!
