Fire Ant Control in Dothan, AL | Pest-Ex

Fire ant mounds can make a yard, play area, or worksite hard to use. Pest-Ex serves homes and businesses in Dothan, Enterprise, Ozark, Eufaula, Troy, Ashford, Headland, Abbeville, and Webb. We inspect the mounds, trails, and areas people use, then talk through service options for the property. Since 1956, our locally owned team has helped Wiregrass neighbors tackle pest problems.

Signs you have fire ants

A mound is the most visible sign, but activity around the property can appear in other ways. Watch for:

  • Fresh, loose soil built into a mound, often with no obvious opening at its center.
  • Ants traveling along edges, pavement, foundations, fences, or outdoor equipment.
  • Workers gathering around spilled food, pet dishes, or other accessible food outdoors.
  • New mounds appearing after rain or when the soil has been disturbed.
  • Ants swarming from the ground on warm days after rainfall.

Why fire ants are a problem in southeast Alabama

Southeast Alabama’s long warm season gives fire ant colonies many months of outdoor activity. In the Wiregrass, mound activity often rises from spring through fall, and rain can bring workers to the surface or make a colony’s location easier to notice. Heat, humidity, and regular rain also mean that a yard can change over the course of a season: one visible mound may be only part of the activity on a property.

Mounds are more than a lawn concern when they form beside paths, entrances, outdoor seating, utility equipment, or places where children and pets play. Ants can sting when a colony is disturbed. For a business, repeated mound activity around customer areas, loading zones, or landscaping can interfere with normal use. A careful inspection helps distinguish fire ant activity from other ants before a treatment plan is chosen.

Large yards can hold several colonies, so the technician checks the full area you want addressed. We look at the yard’s size, mound locations, nearby people and pets, recent weather, and how you use the space.

How Pest-Ex treats fire ants

Pest-Ex inspects visible mounds, ant trails, the areas people use, and nearby conditions. Your technician explains the treatment, access, and preparation before work begins.

We treat the confirmed problem areas, then follow up to review what has changed and what to watch for. Rain and new outdoor colonies can bring fresh mound activity after service.

Ask about recurring pest-control plans for seasonal yard checks. We set the timing and covered areas for your property. For businesses, tell us which entrances, work areas, and outdoor spaces matter most to employees and visitors.

What you can do between visits

A few maintenance steps can make outdoor areas easier to monitor between professional visits:

  • Keep children and pets away from active mounds and avoid kicking, digging into, or flooding a colony.
  • Pick up food scraps and secure garbage so outdoor food sources are less available.
  • Trim plants back from walkways and inspect sunny lawn edges, fence lines, and play areas.
  • Mark mound locations from a safe distance so you can tell whether activity is changing.
  • Tell your technician about new activity, recent yard work, or areas that must remain clear.

Frequently asked questions

When are fire ants most active around Dothan?

Activity is common from spring through fall. Rain and warm weather can bring workers to the surface, so check your yard through the season, especially after storms.

Should I treat a fire ant mound myself?

Do not disturb an active mound, especially where people or pets could be stung. Follow any product label exactly if you use a store product, or ask a pest professional to assess the colony and surrounding area.

Can a mound come back after treatment?

Outdoor colonies and new ant activity can change over time. Pest-Ex can explain what was treated, what signs to monitor, and whether a recurring plan is appropriate for the property.

Does Pest-Ex serve places outside Dothan?

Yes. Pest-Ex serves Dothan, Enterprise, Ozark, Eufaula, Troy, Ashford, Headland, Abbeville, Webb, and nearby Wiregrass communities from its Dothan office.

Called a pest control company and they never responded. Called Pest-Ex and they sent a tech out the very next day. Steve was very professional and a joy to talk with. He sprayed the perimeter of the house and I started to see the effects immediately. He didn't try to upsell any services that I didn't need. Pest-Ex earned my trust! Their rates are fair and reasonable if not better than the national chains. With that being said, we signed up for the quarterly treatment option. I don't normally give 5 stars, but Pest-Ex really impressed me!!! Thank you Pest-Ex!
